TWENTY-SEVEN

Back in the flat, Heather found herself in a state of panic. When she’d phoned Anna to find out Zac’s address for Inspector Black, the conversation had been painful. Anna had yelled at her down the phone and Heather had only managed to defuse the situation by saying that Black was standing beside her. The gist of Anna’s complaint was she had told her mother not to mention Zac to the police – and that was what she’d done. Though it was expressed more forcefully than that. Heather explained that Black had given her no choice, but this explanation did not impress Anna, who said Zac had enough problems on his plate. He did not need interrogations from the police. Heather tried to explain that the police were bound to want to talk to anyone connected with the family, so how was it possible not to mention Zac? They had to question Anna and when they did, she would have to tell them about her boyfriend herself. Anna calmed down slightly. She gave Zac’s address and phone number, if with bad grace.

But that did not cheer Heather. Anna had threatened to finish with her if she pointed the police in the direction of Zac. Suddenly it felt as if the floor was collapsing underneath her and she had to sit down.

Heather noticed her breathing had become difficult and her pulse was racing so she tried breathing more deeply, to see if that would slow her heart rate down. Eventually her body started to behave and she began to feel more normal, but Heather still could not concentrate her mind. And all there was around her was an impersonal rented room she hated.

Eventually, she was able to walk over to the window, and found herself looking at a view of Elsa’s high hedge, which she didn’t like either. She stared at the nails on her right hand. One had been done serious damage at some point. She would have to trim that right down.

She gave her hair a flick. It felt brittle after her swim. Another shower with lots of herbal shampoo was in order. Had she remembered to put on moisturiser? Some more wouldn’t do any harm. She walked over to a mirror and looked at herself. Her reflection was like her inner state – distressed. And she’d already wondered if she was losing Alex. How could she hope to keep a husband if she let herself go? She sighed.

Alex had been taking more care over his appearance lately; she’d noticed he’d started using Grecian, and she hated a man using colouring on his hair. He wasn’t doing that to please her. If he was doing it for someone else, who might it be? Someone at work probably, maybe somebody she had never even met. Heather hated suffering doubts like these. What to do about this? Do some digging about so she could dismiss the idea? She would feel less guilty about her own behaviour if Alex was being unfaithful as well, though she hated the thought and dreaded having her suspicions confirmed.
